Vintage postcards take
the reader on a
fascinating journey through Far Southwest
Virginia.
The cards come from the collection of St. Paul attorney
Frank Kilgore, a native of the area and
long-time memorabilia collector.
Over 250 vintage
postcard scenes of gently rolling mountains
and valleys, bustling market towns, coal
camps, and strong people illustrate the
beauty and the challenges of life in this
corner of Central Appalachia during the
first half of the 20th century.
Informative
captions by Kathy Shearer place the
postcards in their historical settings as
life moved from the cornfields to the
coalfields.
Russell, Lee,
Tazewell, Scott, Wise, Buchanan, and
Dickenson Counties, and the City of Norton
are featured. Postcard views include steam trains,
coal camps, county seats, panoramas of
scenery such as Burke's Garden and Powell
Valley, and real photos of individuals.
